Privacy Policy

This policy applies to all information submitted to or collected by Typetrigger on all of its platforms and websites.

Values & Philosophy

We’d like to state right up front that we’re not in the advertising or data mining business. We sell a writing tool to writers, not user data to advertisers. As such, we don’t collect information from you that we don’t need to make the project work. And we try actively to minimize the personal data that we collect. Our approach to privacy is that it’s a basic right and default setting. Your data is your own. After all, writers are by nature vulnerable, and we know it’s our responsibility to protect you.

Information Collected

What Data We Collect

As should be obvious, your content — the writing, comments, messages, and profile data you submit — is all data that we collect from you. This data is transferred to our servers using industry standard encryption, where it is processed and stored securely.

We keep server logs as needed for operations & security purposes. This data includes basic usage data like your IP address & browser user agent. This data is not shared.

Personally, I like a cookie with lots of nuts — like a florentine. Cookies on the web are less flavorful, but still useful. We use cookies on the site and similar tokens in the app to keep you logged in.

Any demographic data you elect to provide us, in the course of filling out your user profile or responding to any surveys or questionnaires, will be used simply to understand who our users are. We remind you here that we only ask for such information precisely because we don’t track you in other ways. If you elect to provide answers to such questions, we hope they are “real answers”. We will keep them private, will not show them to other users, and will not sell them to any third parties.

Some Things We Don’t Collect

We don’t collect or store data that isn’t required for providing our core functionality. We do not collect personally identifiable info to sell to advertisers.

In the event that we work with sponsors or other commercial partners in the future would likely share broadly aggregated demographic information about our user base as a whole. We would never share data with such parties, however, that is specific to particular users and could be used for behavioral surplus analysis or tracking of individual users.

Advertising identifiers, such as Apple’s IDFA or Google’s GAID, which are used to track user activities inside of apps, are not used.

Our goal with Typetrigger is to sell you a constructive writing experience, not to sell you to advertisers.

Info Collected by Our Upstream Providers

We do not control, process, or store the data you provide when paying for subscriptions to our service. This data remains in the GDPR- & CPPA-compliant hands of our upstream infrastructure providers.

We use Google Analytics to record basic info about user navigation & traffic volume. If we have time in the future we might use this to improve our user experience. Our use of these services are always as minimal as possible, and we do not share data between Google’s Analytics services and their Advertisement platforms. If, for privacy reasons, you prefer to obfuscate yourself from Google tracking, we commend you. Go for it. It won’t affect the usability of our services.

Our upstream providers also collect server logs as needed for operations & security purposes. These data are not shared.

In the future we may expand our service offerings to include partnerships with other businesses, such as on-demand printing services. Such transactions will likely involve the transfer of user data. Any such arrangement would be guided by the same values that guide the services described here. Only data which is necessary to provide the stated services would be transferred. Any third party service providers would be required to have data policies in place which put privacy first and fully comply with GDPR and CPPA rules. In cases where we felt that 3rd party service providers were not able to offer a level of privacy and data protection commensurate with our own standards, their services would be labeled to make this clear to our users.

Security

We implement a variety of industry standard, best-practice security measures to help keep your information secure. For instance, all communication between the mobile app or web client and our servers is encrypted using SSL/TLS. We minimize locally stored data like tokens & cookies, and always store sensitive data as encrypted hashes rather than cleartext.

Your Rights

Consent

By using our site or apps, you consent to our privacy policy. If in the future you would like to withdraw your consent, you may do so at any time by deleting your data & terminating your account.

Data Retention

Your data will be stored indefinitely while your account is active.
If you choose to delete your data, it will be removed immediately from our database.
Personal data existing in database backups will be removed based on the backup schedules of our upstream providers. This can take up to 90 days.
We will always retain basic customer identifying and account data, as required for our business & accounting practices.

Accessing, Changing, or Deleting Information

Typetrigger provides several tools that give you control over your publicly posted data.

Post Visibility

When you post writing to Typetrigger, you choose a visibility setting for that post. The visibility setting will default to whatever you choose in your profile settings, but can be customized on a per-post basis. The options for levels of visibility are:

  • Public – Public posts are visible to anyone who visits the site
  • Members – A post with this setting will be visible only to logged-in users of the site
  • Private – Private posts are not visible to anyone besides you, but will still show up in groups you choose to post them to

You can change the privacy setting for a post at any time in its single-post view.

Deleting Your Content

You can delete a post by viewing it in the single-post view (click on the link icon). Rather than deleting it, you might consider just changing its visibility setting. Once it’s marked “private,” no one will see it but you. It will even disappear from other users’ collections. Note, however, that even private posts can be shared in groups. To remove a piece from a group, de-select it in the post settings.

Comments in group discussions can be deleted inline using the delete icon.

Downloading Your Posts

You can download your posts in a readable format from your account settings page.

Account Deletion

If you want, you can stop using our service and delete your data at any time. We recommend exporting your writing and cancelling your subscription first, before deleting your account. If you really do feel this is necessary, you can find all this stuff in the Settings area. But we hope you’ll stay. We believe you have a “right to be forgotten” — but we’d prefer to remember you as an active member of the community!

Please note that we retain data belonging to accounts with lapsed subscriptions for a few months, so that you may return to the fold later on.

You Control Emails & Notifications

You can opt out of most emails & notifications in your account settings. Of course, you always agree to receive communications pertaining to account administration.

We comply with the General Data Protection Regulation. By using our service, you authorize us to collect, use, and store your information outside of the European Union.

California Online Privacy Protection Act

We comply with the California Online Privacy Protection Act. We therefore will not distribute your personal information to outside parties without your consent.
